Cochran Family Photos from Steve Eskew, Marion, KY

Photography:

The following photos having connection to the Cochran family of Crittenden County, Kentucky, were obtained from Seattle, Washington and brought back to Crittenden County by Steve Eskew, who scanned the photos and has kindly posted them at https://steveeskew.com/index.php?id=cochran-family-photos.  I further processed the photos, specifically to display head or bust images of the persons photographed, in order to compare to previous Crittenden County images I have collected that remain unidentified.  I did not examine the photos, so cannot say whether the prints are albumen or gelatine, a determination which aids in dating.  Most are probably gelatine.

Identification of Photographs:

Each photograph in the collection of Seattle images numbered sequentially, using the form: C 001.  They are not in chronological order.  The dates of the photos are estimated from their type of mount.  Some have legends on their backs, noted in the column to the right.  Some identifications can be made from images previously identified, also noted in the right hand column.

Cast of Characters:

   C001

C 001:
Photographic gelatine or albumen print, 5x7". , mounted on a charcoal gray, rough textured mat board, ~8½x12½".

Photographer:  Amateur or possibly professional "family & house" outdoor portrait.

Subject:  The back of the mount is inscribed in pencil: "Bro. Eli Nunn & children".

Eli Lacy Nunn (1842-1927) and his first wife, Maria A. Phillips (1850-1899) had nine children.  In this photo would appear to be the five youngest children.

Since they had just two boys, their first and fourth children, the small boy next to Eli could not possibly be a son, but rather is a grandson, possibly Earl W. Nunn (1902-1980).

The three youngest girls are young enough to be identified by their relative heights, e.g. youngest is the shortest.  This method does not work for Clara and Addie, who are grown and about the same height.  The seated girls appear to be in birth order left to right, so, as a guess, the oldest girls are supposed to be also in birth order left to right, i.e., Clara on the left, Addie on the right.

The most likely persons in the photo are thus (left to right):
1. [probably] Clara (1881-1968; standing),
2. Ina (1887-1961; sitting),
3. Earl W. (1902-1980; standing),
4. Eli Lacy Nunn (1842-1927; sitting in rocking chair),
5. Nelle B. (1890-1974; sitting),
6. [probably] Addie (1884-1974; standing), and
7. Mary Belle (1892-1971; sitting).

Date:  undated, c. 1904.

The type and color of the mat board indicates that it is no earlier than about 1900.  This is what suggested that the subjects included Eli's youngest children rather than his oldest children.

The youngest child (far right) appears to be an early teen, perhaps about 13.  Since she was born in 1892, the photo would be therefore ~1905.  In 1905, Earl W. Nunn would be ~3 years old, which is about what the small boy in the photo appears to be.  In 1905, Eli Nunn would be ~63 years old, which is consistent with his appearance.
1. [probably] Clara (1881-1968), detail from Image C001.
2. Ina (1887-1961), detail from Image C001.
5. Nelle B. (1890-1974), detail from Image C001.
6. [probably] Addie (1884-1974), detail from Image C001.
7. Mary Belle (1892-1971), detail from Image C001.

C 002:
  Albumen print, cabinet card, 4¼x6½".

Photographer:
Studio portrait, "Douglas, Evansville, Ind." imprint on the front..

Subject:
The back of the card is inscribed in ink: "Tom Cochran, Marion, Ky, Dadi internote friend", and inscribed in pencil: "Tom Cochran".  This is Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952).

Date:
  c. 1885-1890.  He appears to be 25-30 years old.  Douglas used many styles of cabinet cards.  This particular style of Douglas cabinet card is the same as used for the portraits of FPY 014 Ambie Pierce and FPY 015 Cora Pierce, two daughters of James Perry Pierce, taken around 1883, and we can assume that the card should have been used around that time, and perhaps a bit later, considering that Cochran would have been only 21 years old in 1883.  He does appear younger than he does in either Image C 025 or Image C 046, which were probably taken in 1895. Taking all these hints into account, the image was probably taken 1885-1890, when he was 23-28 years old, so this portrait must be somewhat later.

Photographer:  Professional  portrait, taken in lobby of the bank.  The card is embossed: "Wm. A. Ringo".  Ringo was formerly part of Stewart & Ringo, a photography company active around 1901-1903, judging from their ads in The Crittenden Press.  The partnership must have dissolved by 1910.

Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY, 03 Jun 1904, p.8: Notice of Articles of Incorporation: "Blackford Bank, Webster Co., $15,000 capital stock, D.T. White, J.B. Hanna and J.R. Head of Blackford are chief stockholders."

In Rand-McNally's Bankers Directory and List of Attorneys 1914, p. 380 shows, for the Blackford Bank: established 1904, president = Worth Anderson; vice president = C.W. DeHaven; cashier = Geo. H. Nunn and assistant cashier = W.A. Martin.

Subject:

Nancy Moxley "Nannie" Rochester (1891-?).  She was identified by her resemblance to her known image, including her large curls that she wore around that age.  Also, she is sitting just in front of her parents in photo C 007.

C007 detail:

Subject:

Nathaniel Gray Rochester (1889-1882).  He was identified by his resemblance to his known images.  In this photo, he is sitting with the other young boys rather than near his parents, but his resemblance to C 062 and C 042 is very strong.

Subjects:

(Left) Luther Miller (1856-1946) and
(Right) Mary Ann (Cochran) Miller (1856-1940).  These two people are sitting close together and were assumed to be married.  Then they were identified as were other couples above, by considering, in turn,  all photos of Cochrans and their spouses in this collection until one couple appeared to match.

Lower Image Strips:

C007 detail:

Subjects:

(Left) Nannie Miller (1896-?) and
(Right) Leona Miller (1894-?)

These children are sitting right in front of Luther Miller and his wife Mary Ann (Cochran) Miller, and therefore are assumed to be their daughters.

The image supplying many of the knowns in the Cochran extended family, C 062) was taken two years earlier (1896) than was this Nunn family photo (1898) - the to Miller children were too young there to provide much comparison to these children, but considering their position and apparent ages, it is very likely that they are Nannie and Leona.

Notice that Nannie is wearing a Union Civil War cap.  Marion, KY was right on the border between Union Illinois and Confederate Kentucky.  A grandfather probably fought for the Union.

C 008: Photographic albumen [probably] print, cabinet card size: 4¼x6½" on an off-white card .

Photographer:  Studio portrait; photographer's imprint is: "Hanson, Memphis and Clarksville, Tenn."  Memphis is at the extreme western edge of Tennessee.  Clarksville is more to the middle of Tennessee and near the upper state line, almost 80 miles approximately due south of Crittenden County, KY.

Subject:
It is difficult to be sure from this nearly straight-on angle, and a combination of overexposure and fading through time, but the similarity to FPY 111 and C 010 mean that this is probably Elvie (Crider) Cochran (1870-1908), daughter of Presley Harris Crider (1829-1884) and Sarah Jane Shipton (1838-1909), and wife of Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952) .

Date:
c.1890; she appears to be about 20 years old - perhaps a couple years younger.  This date is right in the middle of an era when cabinet cards were popular.  By 1910, cards tended to be charcoal in color, and photo sizes were not as uniform as on a cabinet card.
  C009

C 009:
Photographic gelatine print ~5x7", mounted on a charcoal colored card ~8x10".

Photographer:  Photographer unknown.

Subject:

Only a few of the children are identified by the inscription in ink on the front of the card:

Back Row (left to right):
1-4:  Unknown

5 (i.e.  next to the teacher):  Dick Hicklin.  Richard S. Hicklin, son of Eva May and James Thomas Hicklin, was born 23 May 1905.

Front Row (left to right):
1:  Eston Yates.  Eston E. Yates, son of Lora Edith and Rev. Benjamin Lewis Yates, was born 6 Nov 1905.

2-3:  Unknown

4:  Thomas Crider Cochran (1906-1966),son of Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952) and Elvie Crider (1870-1908), and husband of Georgia Helen Nunn (1908-2004), born 11 Jun 1906.

5:  Bill Yates.  William Morrison Yates, son of Cara Annis (Daughtrey) and William Brown Yates, is reported to be born 1907-1908.  Since he is in this class, he was more likely born in 1906 or late 1905, as are the other identified students.

6:  (William L. ?) Bigham.  William Lycurgus Bigham Jr., son of Georgia (Harmon) and William Lycurgus Bigham Sr., was born 3 Dec 1905.

Date:  c.1913; Thomas appears to be about 7 years old.

Lower Image Strip:

  C010

No. 1: As is.

No. 2: Contrast & Brightness Enhanced.

No. 3: Enhanced with Numbers.

C 010: Photographic albumen print, ~8x10", mounted on an off-white to tan colored board, ~8x11".

Photographer:  Probably taken by an amateur -one of the participants in the picnic.

Subject:
Marked on the back "1894 picnic".

This photo includes:

A number of Cochrans (Nannie Moxley Cochran and five of her ten children and their spouses),

A smattering of leading figures of Marion, KY (including John T. Franks, current sheriff of Crittenden Co., , and Ollie M. James, future representative and senator of Kentucky), and

All members of the James Perry Pierce (former sheriff of Crittenden Co.,) family except for Ira Tilden Pierce, age 18.  It is tempting to think that Ira might have been the amateur photographer who took the picture.  Six women remain unidentified.

The full list of numbers and their sometimes tentative identifications is given in the table: Picnic, 1894, Crittenden Co., KY, identifications.

Date:
  1894.

The close-up detail photos below compare the persons thought to be identified with other images of them from the entire collection of photographs on this site.

Picnic, 1894, Crittenden Co., KY, identifications.

2

(LP) Mary Ann (Cochran) Miller (1858-1940), married No. 1 Luther Miller in 1893

3

(LP) Possibly Dora Ann (Cochran) Rodgers (1867-1951).  Her husband, Robert A. Rodgers, does not seem to be here, as expected, so this identification may not be correct.

4

Unknown

5

Nelle Walker (1865-1950), daughter of Robert Newton Walker (1833-1906)

6

Cora A. (Pierce) Crider (1869-1915), married George McClelland Crider (probably No. 26) in 1891

7

(LP) Probably Florence (Pierce) Yandell (1861-1938), daughter of No. 11 James Perry Pierce and No. 8 Emeline (Ralston) Pierce.  She married William Bennett Yandell (1857-1940), who does not appear to be in the photo, in 1885.

8

Emeline (Ralston) Pierce (1840-1895), married No. 11 James Perry Pierce (1841-1916) in 1860.

9

(LP) Probably Norval Lee Pierce (1871-1951), son of No. 11 James Perry Pierce and No. 8 Emeline (Ralston) Pierce.  He married Margaret Ramey Bond in 1912.  She is not present.

10

(LP) George Collin Pierce (LP) (1877-1965), son of No. 11 James Perry Pierce and No. 8 Emeline (Ralston)).  He married, first, Lucy Ruth Boaz in 1897; she is not present.

11

James Perry Pierce (1841-1916), married No. 8 Emeline F. Ralston in 1860.

12

15

Unknown

16

(LP) Probably Nancy (Moxley) “Nannie” Cochran (1843-1923).  She married John Thomas Cochran (1834-1904) in 1860.  He had a beard and does not seem to be present, nor does any man having a beard who is that old.

17

Ollie Murray James (1871-1918), future representative and senator from KY

18

(LP) Possibly Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Loving (1865-1951).  Lizzie married No. 25 John Thomas Franks in 1895.  Since the photo was taken less than 18 months before their wedding, she could have attended the picnic with him.

19

Unknown

20

Unknown

21

(LP) Probably Joseph G. Rochester (1854-1929), married Anna Cochran (possibly No. 13) abt. 1888

22

(LP) Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952), married No. 23 Elvie Crider in 1895.

23

(LP) Elvie Crider (1870-1908), married Thomas Henry Cochran in 1895.

24

(LP) probably John Watts Cochran (1877-1927).  He married Eva Farris (1883-1953) in 1907, so she is not expected to be in attendance as a girlfriend.  Her sister, Lucy, married No. 10 George Collin Pierce.

25

John Thomas Franks (1858-1926).  He married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Loving (1865-1951), who is possibly present as No. 18, in 1895.  He was the sheriff of Crittenden Co. in 1894.

26

(LP) Probably George McClelland Crider (1861-1917),  who married No. 6 Cora (Pierce) Crider (1869-1915) in 1891.  This person’s identification is not sure, but Cora probably would not have gone to a picnic without him, and this person looks the most like him in the photo.

C 014:
Photographic gelatine print ~4x5½", mounted on a tan colored card ~5½x10½", having a shield-like embossing at the bottom.

Photographer:  Studio portrait, "J.L. Stewart, Marion, Ky.".  This card is the exact same style as C 015, which is a photo of the same baby, and obviously taken at the same time.

Subject:

Probably Thomas Crider Cochran (1906-1966),son of Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952) and Elvie Crider (1870-1908), and husband of Georgia Helen Nunn (1908-2004).  Since there are so many Thomas Crider Cochran photos, the baby photos are probably of him also.

Date:  c.1907; he appears to be about 1 year old or less.

Lower Image Strip:
Comparison of examples of all known or suspected images of Thomas Crider Cochran, in approximate order of age from left to right.  See MISC 053 for discussion of identifications.  This photo is not included in the strip for two reasons: 1) the strip is quite long already, and this photo was pretty obviously made at the same time of the same baby, and 2) the photo is out of focus, or the baby moved during the exposure.

Date:
The style of mounting looks to be 1900-1910; he looks to be no older than about 25, so the best guess is c.1900    .

Lower Image:
Comparison of examples of all known or suspected images of Samuel George Cochran, in approximate order of age from left to right.  See MISC 064 for discussion of identifications.
  C019

Oval photographic (probably gelatine) print, cut from a print ~3½x5", mounted on an off-white card ~6x9".  S
ame mount as his brother in C 020.  C 019 and C 020 also appear to have been water-stained at the same time.

Photographer:  Studio portrait, unmarked as to photographer.

Subject:
The back is inscribed in ink: "Emmett Rodgers".  Robert Emmett Rodgers (1889-1968), son of Robert A. Rodgers (1864-1930) and Dora Ann Cochran (1867- 1951), and husband of Bernadine Chamberlain (1894-1968).

Oval photographic (probably gelatine) print, cut from a print ~3½x5", mounted on an off-white card ~6x9".  Same mount as his brother in C 019.  C 019 and C 020 also appear to have been water-stained at the same time.

Photographer:
Studio portrait, unmarked as to photographer.

Subject:
The back is inscribed in ink: "A. Herbert Rodgers".  Archibald Herbert Rodgers (1891-1963), son of Robert A. Rodgers (1864-1930) and Dora Ann Cochran (1867- 1951), and husband of Susan B. Boston (1893-1993)     .

Date:

c.1907, assuming it was taken at the same time as C 019, which is probably a good guess.  He would be about 16 years old.

  C021

C 021:
Photographic gelatine print ~3x4½", mounted on a art-deco style, green colored card ~5x7½".  The photos C 021, C 029, C030, C 048, C 050, C 056, and C 057 all are by the same photographer and have similar mounts, indicating that they may have been taken at the same time at same sitting.  This photo and card are an exact duplicate as C 029.

Photographer:  Studio portrait, marked "Humphrey, Lexington, Ky.".

Subject:

Thomas Crider Cochran (1906-1966),son of Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952) and Elvie Crider (1870-1908), and husband of Georgia Helen Nunn (1908-2004).

Date:  c.1930; he appears to be in his middle twenties.

Middle Images:  The left hand detail of Thomas is as the photo exists now, having a bluish cast from silver mirroring, a common condition in antique photographs due to oxidation of the silver in the outermost layer of the print.  The right hand detail is the same image after using Photoshop to darken the cyan portion of the color in the image.

Lower Image Strip:
Comparison of examples of all known or suspected images of Thomas Crider Cochran, in approximate order of age from left to right.  See MISC 053 for discussion of identifications.
  C022

C 022:
Domed-shape photographic gelatine print, cut from a print ~4½x6½", mounted on a fancy card ~7x10½", colored in shades of green.  It is printed on photographic paper having what is called a "silk" finish.  The detail image on the right shows to what extent such a finish basically obscures any detail in the photograph.  Photos C 022 and C 059 are exact duplicates.

Photographer:
Studio portrait; "Franklin's Studio, Bowling Green, Ky." is printed on the card, along with a small "Pat'd Jan. 18, '27", which presents a minimum date for the photograph.

Subject:
Georgia Helen Nunn (1908-2004), son of George Hugh Nunn (1872-?) and Ermon Cain (1877- 1942).  She married Thomas Crider Cochran (1906-1966) in 1938, the subject of so many of the photos in this collection.  This print and mount are identical to those for print No. C 059, which is inscribed on its back: "George Helen Nunn".

Date:

c.1930-35; she appears to be consistent with an age of the middle twenties.

  C023

C 023:
Photographic gelatine print, an oval cut ~3¾x5¼", mounted on a textured, dark green or black mat board, ~6x9", having a gold fleur-de-lis in addition to the embossed photographer's name.

"Father of
     Anna Hays Nunn Lamb
     Douglas D. Nunn
     Georgia Helen Nunn Cochran
     Christine Nunn Abbott
Mother - Ermon Cain Nunn
(George Hugh Nunn's Picture)"

Photographer:  Studio portrait; the card is embossed: "Wm. A. Ringo", who, in the early years of the 20th century, was a partner with long time Marion, KY photographer J.L. Stewart.  That Ringo is on his own indicates that this photo was certainly taken after 1904, when the Stewart & Ringo ads in The Crittenden Press cease.

Subject:
George Hugh Nunn (1872-?), son of John Nunn (1812-1899) and Clarissa Ann "Clara" Phillips (1843-1926), and husband of Ermon Cain (1877-1942).

Date:
  c. 1915.  He looks slightly older than his detail photo in C 006 that was probably taken about 1910.

Lower Image:

William Bennett Yandell (1857-1940) and his wife Florence Emeline (Pierce) Yandell (1861-1938).  Florence is the sister of C 027, another Cook oval photo.

Date:
c.1905-1910, if taken at about the same time as all the other Cook oval photographs; that would make him 48-53 and her 44-49 years old.

Date:  c.1930; he appears to be in his sixties, and ~1930 was when the other faded sepia toned photo (C 043)was taken.

Detail Image:  This photo, and its duplicate, C 047, are  underexposed and/or faded.  Photoshop was used to adjust the contrast and brightness, and to keep the color about the same as what the original probably was when new.

C 032:
Photographic gelatine print, ~2¾x4", mounted on its art-nouveau style, gray colored card ~5x6½".

Photographer:  "J.L. Stewart, Marion, Ky.".

Subject:

Probably Thomas Crider Cochran (1906-1966),son of Thomas Henry Cochran (1862-1952) and Elvie Crider (1870-1908), and husband of Georgia Helen Nunn (1908-2004).  The identification is assumed because of the large number of photos in this collection of Thomas Crider Cochran, and that the card mount is the type of mounting and style used about the time of his birth.

Date:  c.1906; he appears to be less than 1 year old.

Detail Image:  A close-up of the subject.

  C034

C 034:
An oval, cut from a  photographic gelatine print  ~3½x5", and mounted on a dark green or black card, 6x8½".

Photographer:  Studio portrait, embossed: "C.C. Cook, Fort Smith, Ark.".  Several photos from The Cochran Photos and more from the Florence Yandell Pierce photos were taken by this photographer, seemingly from a distant location.  But C.C. Cook was born in Marion, KY, and visited during the early years of the 20th century (See FPY 116 for discussion).

Subject:
Nell A. Walker (1865-1950), daughter of Robert Newton Walker (1833-1906) and Sarah Jane Clement (1835-1918).

Date:
c.1900; she appears to be about 35-40 years old - in 1902 she would be 37, and 1902 is in the period during which the other C.C. Cook photos appear to have been taken.
  C035

C 035:
An oval, cut from a photographic gelatine print ~2x3", mounted on a dark green or black mat ~3¾x5¼".

Photographer:  Studio portrait; the mat is embossed simply: "Dilks".  The St. Louis 1900 census shows a married pair of photographers: Morton and Catherine Dilks.  This photo was undoubtedly made by them, considering the rarity of the name Dilks.

Subject:
Cora A. Pierce (1869-1915)., identified by comparison to known photos of Cora (see Lower Image).

Date:
c.1900; she appears to be about 35 years old.

  C036

C 036:
Albumen print on off-white card, ~4¼x6½" .

Photographer:  Studio portrait, card is printed: "Stafford & LeForge, Decatur, Illinois".  Decatur is in Macon County, about in the middle of Illinois.  After the Civil War, James Perry Pierce farmed in Gallatin County, IL, just across the Ohio River from Crittenden County, KY, but not particularly close to Gallatin Co.

Subject:

This woman looks kind of like Emeline Rolston (1840-1895), the wife of James Perry Pierce.  There are a number of known Emeline photos, both before and after the time when this photo must have been taken.  All of Emeline's photos show a nose that is concave upwards - what might be called a ski-jump nose, whereas this woman has a bump in the middle.  Therefore, this woman cannot be Emeline Rolston.

This woman is in the same generation as Emeline, though.  She looks to be about 50-60 years old at the time the photo was taken, i.e., about 1890.  Therefore, the woman was probably born 1830-1840.

One woman that meets the age requirements is Nancy "Nannie" Rebecca Moxley (1843-1923), the wife of John Thomas Cochran (1834-1904) and the grandmother of Thomas Crider Cochran, the subject of many photos in this collection.  However, there are two known images of her in this collection (C 007 and C062), which show a woman with a much wider face - no match.

Another possibility is Thomas Crider Cochran's  other grandmother, Sarah Jane Shipton (1838-1909), the wife of Presley Harris Crider (1829-1884).  There are no known photos of her, but she was born in Illinois, and perhaps more likely to have a photo made in Illinois than any of Thomas's other kin.

For now, she must remain Unknown

Date:
  c.1890.
  C037

C 037:
Photographic gelatine print ~5x6", unmounted - just a sheet of print paper.  Itg appears to have been matted at one time to expose a circle having a 4½" diameter .

Thomas can sometimes be identified by his ear shape only, and this is one of those instances.

Date:
c.1909; he looks to be about 3 years old.

Date:  c.1906; he appears to be less than 1 year old.
