Ruth Winslow Album - Carroll Co., KY Historical Society

The Album

This album resides in the Carroll Co., KY Historical Society collection.  I was kindly allowed to use a laptop and a scanner to copy the photos.  Some but not all were identified, either from inscriptions on the backs of the photos, or by inscriptions in the album.  The album inscriptions may have been added by Historical Society members who either personally knew or recognized the subject(s) of a photo.  Unfortunately, I did not keep track of the order in which the photos in the album had been mounted, which may have given some hint about the unidentified photos.  As a result, they are in approximate alphabetical order.

The Album Cover is inscribed: "Ruth Winslow  Christmas 1884"

Pages within have slide-in pockets to hold cabinet cards, four to a page.

Cabinet cards, consisting of a photographic print mounted on a stiff  4¼" wide x 6½" high card, were a popular form of photographs during the four decades from the 1870's through the 1900's.

Most of the cards in the album, dated from the apparent age of an identified subject, appear to date from right around 1885-1890.

The album also contains several loose photographs from well after 1900.

Ruth Winslow was born in 1864, and would have been 20 yrs when she started the album.

Image RW 032:
Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo), unidentified.  On the back side is written in ink: "MBW Sep 14, 1885".

The photographer's imprint on the front reads: "Frank Leffler, Miama, Mo".

There does not appear to be a "Miama" in Missouri, despite the photographer's imprint.  If he did indeed mean Miami (Saline Co.), Missouri, the young woman could be a member of the family of Daniel Branson Coltrane (1842-1937) family.  His oldest daughter, Mary Juanita Coltrane (1873-1948) would have been 12 yrs. old.

Image RW 004 in this album, identified as Mary Juanita Coltrane (1873-1948), appears to be the same young woman.

Even though Maynie (Bond) Winslow (1872-1957) is also about the correct age, and bears more than a superficial resemblance to the photo, Mary Juanita Coltrane is a better match.

Date: 14 Sep 1885

Image RW 033:  Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo), not marked or identified in the album.

This photograph appears to be the same young woman as in Image RW 040,  identified as Ruth Winslow (1864-1893), daughter of William Beverley Winslow (1814-1883) and Martha Jane Woolfolk (1826-1905), and wife of Henry Schueman (1860-1929), and the mother of Henry W. Schueman (b.1893).

The name Schueman is often spelled Schuerman in written records.

Date: c. 1890

Image RW 034:  Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo), not marked or identified in the album.

Female or no, this child appears to be a dead ringer for the child identified as Henry W. Schuerman earlier in this collection.

Date: c. 1890

Image RW 035:  Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo) marked "Winslow, Katherine Troutman.

In 1887, Katherine (Katie) Troutman (1862-1940's), daughter of John C. Troutman (abt. 1833-?) and Mary Unknown (abt. 1838-?), married William Beverley Winslow (1862-1930's), the son of William Beverley Winslow (1814-1883) and Martha Jane Woolfolk (1826-1905).

A poorly legible census of 1870 in Carroll Co., KY calls her Lorenk Troutman .  It turns out that this is Logan K., Logan being her mother's maiden name.  She is the daughter of John C. Troutman (abt. 1833-?) and Esther Mary Logan (abt. 1838-?).

A number of photographs of Maynie Bond are present in other albums on this web site.  Highlights are as follows.

Image RW 038:  Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo) marked "Winslow, Pauline".

Someone at the historical society probably recognized and marked in the album the name "Pauline Winslow", but had incorrectly assumed that her last name was Winslow because she was the mother of Lucy Ann Winslow (1863-1950), the wife of Henry Moore Winslow (1850-1931).

She is actually Pauline (Karr) Cooper (abt.1839-?), daughter of Thomas Madison Karr (1812-1851) and Lucy Ann Gentry (1814-1900).  Pauline married John C. Cooper (abt.1834-?).  One of their four children, Lucy Ann Cooper (1863-1950), married Henry Moore Winslow (1850-1931), son of William Beverley Winslow (1814-1883) and Martha Jane Woolfolk (1826-1905).

Image RW 039:  Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo) marked "Winslow, Pierce Godbey".

Pierce Godbey Winslow (1873-1948) was the last child of William Beverley Winslow (1814-1883) and Martha Jane Woolfolk (1826-1905).  About 1895, he married (1st) Maynie Laura Bond (1872-1957).  They divorced 1900-1910 and both remarried.

Pierce Godbey Winslow married (2nd) Ethel Smith (1870-1948), daughter of James W. Smith (1840-1916), (who, being a Michigan-born yankee, is not closely related to the Kentucky Smiths in this album) and Martha Jane Dempsey (1846-1925).

Image RW 040:  Cabinet card (4¼x6½" photo) marked "Winslow, Ruth".  The back side of the photo is inscribed in pencil: ''T. E. Grove, 4th & Jeff., Louisville, Ky.''

The relationship of T.E. Grove (possibly Thomas E. Grove) is not yet known.

Ruth Winslow (1864-1993) is the daughter of William Beverley Winslow (1814-1883) and Martha Jane Woolfolk (1826-1905), and wife of Henry Schueman (1860-1929), and the mother of Henry W. Schueman (b.1893).

The name Schueman is often spelled Schuerman in written records.

Huddleston, the photographer having the FMH logo, was the most common photographer of the cabinet cards in the album of James Andrew Bond, which also features Carroll Co., Kentucky subjects.

Date: c. 1885
