Counterfeit Novel View Camera Variation 1.0

Anthony's Photographic Bulletin Vol. 13 April 1882, p. 160

      E. & H.T. Anthony introduced a new camera which they called the Novel View in April 1882; the accompanying engraving (above) illustrates a wooden front standard.  This wooden front Novel camera is here called the Novel View Variation 1.0, and may or may not have been manufactured, since the earliest Novel so far found, the Novel View Variation 1.5, has a metal front standard, as do all other examples and variations of the Novel View.

The camera below has a wooden front standard, and, because it possesses Anthony-style hardware and rotating bellows, it had been thought to be the elusive Novel View Variation 1.0.  And the rear standard has box joints typical of Anthony as well as rotating bellows.  However, upon studying the small joints and other details, such as the lumpy appendages on the rear standard that contain the hinges for the ground glass frame, I have to conclude that at least parts of this camera, including the front standard, were probably not manufactured by Anthony, but rather a craftsman contstructing a conunterfeit version of a rotating bellows camera.
