Camera Collecting/Jay Tepper story:
I had an opportunity in about 1979 to buy one of these for $1200.
It was being sold by Jay Tepper of Stamford, CT, a camera dealer who was
selling the collection of Harry Gross, the author of the first book on
collecting antique photographica. Harry Gross had gotten it from
the estate of Simon Wing, and the camera was unused, with an uncut lens
board. I had to pass on it, being a poor graduate student at the
time, but wanted a Samuel Peck wet plate studio camera from the same
collection. I told Jay that I was tapped out, and if I could start
a layaway plan on the Peck. He said fine, and then shipped the
camera to me, not having received even the first payment. How many
dealers would have shipped a $2250 wet plate camera on spec. What a
trusting soul. Jay retired about 2011 (other family members still
deal in cameras), but Jay will always be tops with me because of his
belief in the goodness of people. The Peck
camera is one that appeared in that book the Harry Gross wrote, and can
be seen at
this web page.
