Glass Plate
Storage Box - c. 1890
5 x 8
Notes:
The manufacturer of this box is unknown, as there are no stamped
identifications. However, the user of the box was the Child's Art
Gallery, Michigan. There appear to be collodian stains (black
stains from the wet plate process) on the bottom and in the grooves.
The Childs Art Gallery
operated from 1868-1978, originally by
Brainard F. Childs. Studios were in
Marquette, Houghton and Ishpeming Michigan.
Among the more popular products were stereoviews: "Gems of Lake
Superior". The 5x8" plates that fit into this box are the size
that were normally used for stereo pairs.
