Samuel Peck & Co. (New York City,
NY)
Glass Plate
Storage Box - c. 1850-1860
5x6
Notes: The
inside lid is stamped with: "Manufactured by / Samuel Peck & Co."
The width of the plates that fit in this box is exactly 5"; 4¼"-wide
plates would not stay put. The depth of the box could fit
plates 8" long, but for blocks on two sides that shorten the length to
6", possibly as much as 6½". Plates only as
wide as 4¼" would not stay put, so it was
not used for half-plate format. The best guess is 5x6". The
odd size is not unexpected for a box made and used when photographers
made their own sensitive plates from plain glass.
