This lens is basically a rapid
rectilinear design, having a cemented achromat doublet in front and
another in back. It is quite distinctive with its push-pull focus
and set screw. The slot in the barrel into which its Waterhouse
stops slide is exposed by pulling the lens out. Once the stop is
fully in, the lens is pushed back in and the collar fits over the stop
to hold it in place. For this purpose, the stops are uniquely
shaped, being round on the bottom with a triangular section on top
tapering to a small tab at a right angle to the stop.
Morrison Wide Angle Lens Variation 2 also has such a stop
system.
This lens does not appear to have
been advertised amongst the apparently full range of Darlot lenses in
the
Illustrated Catalogue Issued Annually by Thos. H. McCollin, Thos.
H. McCollin (Philadelphia, PA), January 1, 1876, pp. 10-16. It
may therefore have been introduced between 1876 and 1882. From the
number of this lens remaining on cameras of the era, it appears to have
been a fairly common lens in the U.S.A. References: Back to
